How Koinonia Supports Itself

The Online Store

In the 1950s, Koinonia faced tremendous challenges. Living in community, sharing resources, and welcoming Black neighbors—eating together at the same table and offering fair wages—provoked violence. Our once-thriving roadside stand on Highway 19 was bombed twice, and local boycotts brought our large-scale farming operations to a standstill. No one in Sumter County or the surrounding areas would buy from us or sell to us.

In response, we turned to what was then known as the “mail-order business,” which became our primary source of income—a tradition that continues today.

We bake wholesome, handmade goodies right here on the farm. In addition to our bakery items, we offer coffee, tea, honey, crafts, and oils from partners who share our commitment to social justice. Subscription options are available for granola, coffee, and more, making it easy to enjoy our products regularly while supporting our mission. Every purchase from our online store or subscription program directly sustains our work. We need that support—and we need you!

Donations

From the beginning, donors have been at the heart of Koinonia. Whether it was the down payment for our land, support during the years of violence and boycotts, or contributions to annual appeals, capital campaigns, and emergency needs, we couldn’t do this work without you. Your generosity sustains Koinonia’s mission.
